Khoj Cloud Has Been Sunset
Thank you for being part of the Khoj Cloud journey. We made the difficult decision to shut down the hosted service.
The Khoj project started out in April 2021 as an experimental tool to improve document search. By Nov 2023 it had transformed into a Cloud service to deliver personal AI to people without model lock-in, while prioritizing privacy and transparency. Over the last two years, we continued giving it more agentic capabilities, making it more useful for general research tasks.
Our original dream was having a single interface to all your knowledge — your notes, emails, search history. But it turned out that hand-building data integrations was going to be a long tail of effort, especially while there were challenges in defensibility with all the big labs coming out with similar products.
We experimented with strategies to make the project self-sustaining, but ultimately came to the conclusion that initial bets we made for Khoj — a subscription, cloud-first service, complex document syncs, custom data integrations, multiple (6!) clients — made it very difficult to scale in utility.
We're most thankful to all of you, the people who trusted Khoj, motivated us with your kind words and shared feedback to define what the future of human-centric AI should look like.
What comes next
We're still excited about building the future of AI for humans. We're grounded by our core principles of making technology that is open, accessible, and trustworthy.
We're focusing our efforts on Open Paper, a research assistant to help academic and industry researchers accelerate their literature review, and Pipali, an AI coworker for professionals to autonomously complete any computer work on their machine.
Khoj remains fully open-source. You can continue to self-host it for complete data ownership and privacy. For any questions, reach us at team@khoj.dev.
